I was wondering this today, how did an entire industry set up around sharing Ringtones, Operator Logos etc... I guess the early day 'mobile' widgets.
It all same from having a payment gateway in the delivery engine.... i.e.'SMS'. This might be what we're missing for widgets. Would you pay for the delivery of a widget? Maybe the Sniperoo as the link.
Just to clarify my position on this - I dont' have anything against ads or ad networks, and as Nic says, there aren't that many routes to monetisation. I just think there must be more to it than an ad network. There must be hundreds of variant on carrying marketing or advertising or branding messages within a widgetized platform. Or maybe it's just that the term 'ad network' is just too limited or banal to describe what we are seeing, which is hte evolution of online advertising in a multi headed hydra ...
