I don't have a problem with that - I think networking on a social and business basis, all of the time, is enormously healthy.
I like your point, nonetheless, about learning people's inclinations, moods, methods and habits by watching is very valuable.
Paul - thanks for this. I have had some conversations with Ken in the past. He has some very interesting ideas.
Ian - most of the 'microblogs' I read are Twitters and status updates from my Facebook friends. 99% of them are from professional rather than personal contacts.
This is another area in which there is an increasing need for a way of splitting work friends from other friends, but I think the argument works for both.
A little different than the focus of this article, but it works in the same vein. People become aware of the need for help or assistance by listening to the pulse of the conversations around them. Those could be the coffee station at work, or it could be Facebook statuses / Twitter / Jaiku...
