The Equity Kicker: Musings on micro-blogging

That's a very interesting point of view: I did not think about microblogging in that terms yet. I'll immediatly start a little experiment in my company with my collaborators and partners. Thanks for the musings :-) Nicola

Nic, super useful insight here. My friend Ken Thompson over at swarmteams (www.swarm-it.com) has been plowing this furrow for about two years now at http://www.bioteams.com/ and launched an app at about the same time as twitter. I think he would have a few articles that would interest you. (he also has around 14,000 readers I think!).

There's a slight assumption here that your microblogging friends are potential or real business contacts. I would assume that the contrary is normally the case.

I don't have a problem with that - I think networking on a social and business basis, all of the time, is enormously healthy.

I like your point, nonetheless, about learning people's inclinations, moods, methods and habits by watching is very valuable.

    thanks guys.

Paul - thanks for this. I have had some conversations with Ken in the past. He has some very interesting ideas.

Ian - most of the 'microblogs' I read are Twitters and status updates from my Facebook friends. 99% of them are from professional rather than personal contacts.

This is another area in which there is an increasing need for a way of splitting work friends from other friends, but I think the argument works for both.

Nancy White has started a wiki to collect some Twitter Collaboration Stories: http://onlinefacilitation.wikispaces.com/Twitte...

A little different than the focus of this article, but it works in the same vein. People become aware of the need for help or assistance by listening to the pulse of the conversations around them. Those could be the coffee station at work, or it could be Facebook statuses / Twitter / Jaiku...
